Hi, my name is Alyssa Dickerson. I'm an Elementary Education major at the University of South Carolina. In my EDPY 401 class we had to create a web page that justifies an educational video. The video I used is "Education and Children" from the YouTube website. It is about important factors that relate children and education to our future generation. During my video, "I can" by Nas is playing and the words in the song also contribute to relating children and education of the future generation. You can first see the acutal YouTube video below and below that is my response to the video. My response summarizes the video and briefly relates Vygotsky and Piaget to support my justification. I enjoyed most of this project except how much technology based it was. I hope you enjoy my video and my support for it.

Response to Kids & Education Video:

The video I chose is "Education and Children." The video states facts and pictures about children, education, and how they relate to each other. Two particular theoriest, known as Vygotsky and Piaget, can justify why I agree with this video. This video shows pictures of students and adults in situations while relating them to the importance of education. During the video, " I can" by Nas is playing and it contributes to relating situations/opportunites to education.

Factors during childhood include reading and proper nutrition which are essential for the child. During childhood development, teaching the students to express themselves and express themselves through something (ex. art) is important. It is also important to let children understand diversity and how to work with others. This helps students to participate and Vygotsky states, "guided participation as an important rule in this."(Ormrod). It is also important to update students in technology, which I 100% agree with and wish I was as a student. Smaller classrooms can contribute to extra learning which is important in development. The most important of all is education in itself. Being educated is our most successful tool in the world.

The song "I can" is beneficial because it states lyrics like: "I know I can be what I wanna be, if I work hard at it I'll be where I wanna be, in God we trust, things take practice, you can be anything, be careful who you hang out with, watch the company you keep, be your age, and learning to survive." These lryics are powerful and can educate teachers and students. The lyrics can be used as motivational tools in and out of the classroom. Piaget states, "children are motivated learners."(Ormrod). The more motivated the student is the more chances the student has at being successful. Also the lyrics in this song can have stand as positive or negative roles in human development.

Teachers should know how to educate children accordingly to that generation. As generations change, we as future educators should be prepared for what is beneficial. We should know and understand the important factors in childhood and childhood development so we can teach them the proper tools. Teachers give hope and understanding for students' future. Each one of our students is the future of tomorrow!

Alyssa –

I agree. The inscription on the 1890 Gate to Harvard Yard reads “Enter to grow in wisdom. Depart to serve better thy country and mankind.” I think this sums up education quite nicely…each individual should view education as an opportunity for personal growth – to not only serve themselves, but to better serve their country – regardless of how or what they view as “country” and more importantly better serve “mankind”. One cannot then, dismiss the importance of diversity in education…better serving mankind requires the knowledge, appreciation and celebration of ALL of mankind.

Hope this helps…if you need more, I can surely provide more, but I think this sums up my personal beliefs! Thanks and good luck with your project. Chris
