Teachers vs. EDUCATORS

Hello World!! My name is Amber and I am an elementary education major at the University of South Carolina.  I am doing this project for my edpy 401 class.  The videoI chose uses definetions and quotes from famous historians to get the point across that people who are going to pursue a career in education, need to strive to be educators and not just teachers.  Then below my video is my video response to the Teachers vs. Educators video. Watch and Enjoy!!

What I Beleive............

I agree with the video.  I strive to be an educator and not just a teacher. A teacher is just a component of being a teacher.  An educator, like the video said is a mentor.  An educator inspires, enlightens, empowers, is trusted by his/or her students, and is an advisor intelectualy and moraly.  Where as a teacher is someone who gives information about; causes someone to learn;and induces by example or punishment.  I am going to be an elementary school teacher, therefore it is my job to help my students build their own solid learning foundation, that they can build on as they progress in school and in life.   In order to do this I have to be everything that the video potrays and educator as. I have had instructors that were just teachers, who just instructed and just threatened me with punishment if I didn't listen all year; and I have also had educators who guided me and let me learn things for myself.  The educators are the ones that left an impact on my life and actually inspired me to become and educator.  The teachers that I had just made me wish I wasn't at school and I went into cognitive overload all the time.  At the end of the video, there are three quotes by fhistorians.  My favorite one is by Martin Luther King.  He said  "Intellegince plus character is the goal to true education." I agree with him. That is why I am going to just be a teacher and instruct my students so they can become intellegent, but I am going to go above and beyond and be an educator and be a mentor to my students and help them establish their morals.

What the Theroists Beleive......

Piaget was a theorist that beleived that children are active and motivated learners.  He also said that children construct knowledge from their own experiences.  Piaget would agree with this video as well because the video says that an educator is someone who motivates the children and helps mentor them.  In order for students to be motivated, they need someone or something to motivate them and thats what an educator does.  Rather than just instruct and talk at your students all day, like an ordinary teacher; an educator actually gets involved with the students learning process and is there to help too.  Lev Vyostsky was a theorist that studied children's cognitive development.  Vyostsky believed in cognitive apprenticeships, where a student and teacher work together to accomplish tasks or difficult problems. He said that there were basically three features to cognitive apprenticships: Modeling, Coaching, and Scaffolding.  Modeling, is where the educator deonstrates how to do something while telling the students the process aloud while demonstrating how to do it.  Coaching, is where the educator gives suggetstions and feedback while the students are performing the task. Scaffolding, is where the educator provides various types for the students, for example breaking large tasks into smaller more manageable tasks.  According to the video a teacher would just perform the modeling feature in the apprenticeships, because a teacher just demonstrates and tells a student how to do something.  An educator would demonstrate how to do something, as well as letting the students try it for themselves, while coaching and scaffolding them as they do. Piaget and Vyostsky would both agree that been and educator is more than just teaching and instructing.  It's about working with the students, being a mentor, and guiding them into the right moral direction.

Now it's your turn!

What are you going to be just an ordinary teacher or and educator?
