As the world changes so must our education system.  One clear change in our classrooms is the use of more advanced technology.  At the same time this is a change that is still needed in many areas.

Much of the newest technology that could be used in schools, without meaning or relevance to the lesson will instead become competition with the teachers, for the students’ attention.  Because of this the use of technology in class will be unwanted by teachers so, it will become more of a stress for the teachers and students to deal with.  This, according to the cognitive load theory, could lead to cognitive overload of the teacher because (s)he will have more reason to use disciplinary actions.  The students could also potentially experience cognitive overload by worrying more about hiding their use of the technology in the classroom rather than focusing solely on the work they should be focused on.  The technology that is restricted from use in the classrooms plays key roles in students’ everyday lives now; and the roles the technology plays will progress as they transition into a work force.  This indicates that the use could lead to student engagement because of the relevance of technology in students’ lives.

Seeing school as a place where students are prepared for their future, it is important to incorporate the advancing technologies that they will be faced with using in many work forces.  One aspect of Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective states, “Through both informal and formal schooling, adults convey to children the way in which their culture interprets and responds to the world” (Ormrod p. 34).  Those students who may decide to take part in the business world as their career choice may use the internet on their cell phones; or those who choose to work in a technology field must be aware of the major advancements made every day in technology and how the technology influences the rest of the world.  For the most part it seems that technology is not a skill that teachers are required to brush up on.  If teachers are not learning about the advancing technologies then how are they to be required or able to teach about the advancements; or even to teach using the advancements?
